So for my birthday, my sister bought me a wonderful Moleskine watercolor sketchbook, which I wanted to break in when I move out of the country in early August. I couldn’t help myself… I just had to put something in it. I think this came about mostly because I wanted to paint an eye but have been looking a lot at old nature paintings and engravings (Audubon, Walton Ford, Oudry). Usually that style of work is not my favorite, but lately I’ve really been digging it.

At any rate. This is on the first page of my sketchbook. Now the dilemma is, how do I follow this up?!

Fantastic work. Great detailing and colours. Makes me a little sad though, but its a great piece of art!

So it's more like "Buck's Eye" instead of a "Bull's Eye"? I love the detail, the water, the bit of blood and the little stones underneath. I especially like the glazed look, and the leaves you added instead of leaving that part blank. It adds a little life to the death.

Thank you. You have some interesting interpretations on this piece. I never meant for this to come across as a piece about hunting. I intentionally wanted to leave the death ambiguous. Buck eye partially refers to the leaves above the deer's head.

Is that a type of plant? That's kinda cool how you fit that in there. Along with the buck's actual eye. Cx

in love with those three ridges--cheek to jaw--falling away from the bottom of the eye. Very cool to see how well this unusual perspective works for this.

It was a bit difficult to get the perspective feeling right. I know it's nowhere near perfect, but I feel that it does what it needs to do :) Thanks for the lovely comments!

Oh I hate when you draw something AMAZING KICKASS in your sketchbook, and then the rest of the sketches are just trying to live up to the first ><

But yeah this is pretty AMAZING KICKASS. I hope to see you follow it!

Hehe, well since this painting I've just finished this: [link]

Not my best work, but definitely not a sketch. It would be awesome to fill the entire book with nothing but finished pieces. At the rate I work though, that might take the next twenty years. I also have a terrible habit of not finishing any sketchbook before I get a new one. I think it's kind of a release and fresh start to have a new book with nothing to slap me in the face every time I open it.
